Don't let cold weather be an excuse to achieving your running goals! Having the right running gear, a head lamp, and a few friends can make all the difference. If you're like me, you may struggle with poor circulation in your hands (and sometimes toes). I have tried every running glove out there, but each time the temperature drops below 40 F, my fingers become numb. Soon, a deep pain starts to form in my fingers - a frostbite-like feeling. I googled these symptoms one day and self-diagnosed myself with Raynaud's Syndrome, a condition where small arteries constrict excessively in response to cold, limiting blood supply to the affected area (Mayo Clinic).
One of the suggested treatments was to stop running in cold weather. Never!
Thankfully, I happened to be at Costco one day and I bought some ski gloves. On my next wintery run, these bulky, basic gloves kept my hands warm and dry. At only ten bucks, they were a steal.
Enjoy your winter running and stay warm!
P.S. If you're over 21, rum-spiked chai is my new favorite "after-run" recovery drink! (5 parts tea, 1 part soy milk, 1 part Bacardi)
